At the 120th APSA Annual Meeting (Philadelphia, September 5–8, 2024), I co-presented this paper with Lars-Erik Cederman examining how majority nationalist movements construct national identity by selecting and justifying ethnic, linguistic, and religious identity markers. Drawing on new cross-national data, we showed that the identity basis of nationalist movements is shaped by historical and demographic constraints and has systematic consequences for their mobilization patterns and conflict potential.
