At the ISA Annual Convention (San Francisco, April 4–7, 2018), I presented this paper distinguishing three theoretical mechanisms — status equalization, ethnic reification, and threat alleviation — through which power-sharing arrangements affect the political salience of ethnicity. I used survey evidence from divided societies to test which mechanisms operate under which institutional conditions.
