At the PSA Ethnopolitics Workshop (Belfast, November 9–10, 2017), I presented this paper offering a theoretical framework distinguishing status equalization, ethnic reification, and threat alleviation as pathways through which power-sharing shapes the salience of ethnic identity. I drew on comparative evidence to illustrate how different institutional designs activate different mechanisms, with divergent consequences for intergroup relations.
