At the Jan Tinbergen European Peace Science Conference (The Hague, June 24–26, 2019), I presented this paper distinguishing three theoretical mechanisms — status equalization, ethnic reification, and threat alleviation — through which power-sharing arrangements affect how salient ethnicity is in everyday politics. I connected these mechanisms to observable implications for survey-based measures of ethnic identity and political behavior.
