Small steps on the road to peace
Interview with ETH Globe on how inclusive governance and minority power-sharing build the trust needed for lasting peace.
In this interview with ETH Globe (March 2025), I discussed what it takes to build lasting peace in ethnically divided societies. Drawing on my research into power-sharing arrangements, I argued that small institutional steps — carefully designed minority inclusion mechanisms — often matter more than sweeping peace deals, because they generate the concrete demonstrations of commitment that trust requires. I also reflected on how current trends — geopolitical polarisation, weakening international institutions, and the rise of nationalist governance — are eroding exactly the conditions under which peaceful coexistence becomes possible.
