In this radio interview with SRF 4 News Aktuell (December 2024), I was asked to comment on the findings of the 2024 ACLED Conflict Index, which shows that armed conflicts have nearly doubled over the past five years, with Palestine ranking as the most dangerous location globally. I identified three long-term structural drivers: the reduced willingness of the United States to act as global police, the rise of aggressive nationalism in governments worldwide, and the decline of liberal democratic institutions. I specifically highlighted how nationalist governments that exclude ethnic minorities from political participation and economic opportunity make civil war and interstate conflict substantially more likely.
