At the ASN World Convention 2022 (Columbia University, New York, May 2022), I presented this paper examining when different types of ethnic accommodation — power-sharing, autonomy, and multiculturalism — trigger backlash from dominant ethnic groups. I argued that group-based concessions, such as ethnically targeted institutions and autonomy arrangements, more reliably provoke non-institutional mobilization by dominant groups than group-blind policies, with implications for the design of inclusive institutions in diverse societies.
