Grievances, identity, and political opportunity: The effects of corporate and liberal power‐sharing on conflict and democracy — ISA Annual Convention 2023

At the International Studies Association Annual Convention 2023 (Montréal, March 15–18, 2023), I presented this paper examining how corporate versus liberal power-sharing institutions shape ethnic group grievances, identity politicization, and political conflict and democratic quality. Drawing on comparative data across ethnically diverse societies, I showed that the distinction between ethnically targeted institutional guarantees and electorally flexible arrangements has far-reaching consequences for minority attitudes, intergroup relations, and regime stability.
