At SPSA 2020 (Lucerne, February 3–4), I presented this paper revisiting the debate on whether autonomy arrangements are inherently destabilizing or whether specific institutional design features drive secessionist conflict. I argued that the "devilish details" of autonomy design — rather than autonomy per se — account for its observed association with separatist violence.
