Between the Hammer and the Anvil: Majority Nationalism, Minority Accommodation, and Civil War — Jan Tinbergen Conference 2023

At the 22nd Jan Tinbergen European Peace Science Conference (University of Bologna, June 26–28, 2023), I presented this co-authored paper with Lars-Erik Cederman in the "Power Sharing" session (chaired by Nils Weidmann), arguing that minority groups caught between majority nationalist pressures and limited accommodation face compounded risks of civil violence. We developed a formal model capturing the strategic dilemma minorities face when nationalist movements from the majority side harden the constraints on accommodation.
