Nationalism, Populism, and Democracy in Multi-Ethnic States — Jan Tinbergen Conference 2025

At the 24th Jan Tinbergen European Peace Science Conference (University of Barcelona, June 16–18, 2025), I presented this co-authored paper with Daniel Bochsler in the "Ethnic identity" session, exploring the relationship between nationalist and populist rhetoric, ethnic diversity, and democratic quality. We argued that nationalism and populism interact in ways that are especially corrosive for democratic governance in multi-ethnic states, where exclusionary rhetoric targets both ethnic and political "others" simultaneously.
